Getting Rid of the Inbox Icon

In build 347, one could simply drag the Inbox icon into the Recycle Bin, and be done with it. In later builds, this doesn't work, and Microsoft says there's no way to get rid of it without removing Exchange from the system entirely. However, the following procedure does the trick:

For the final release (sometimes):

  1. Right-click on the Inbox icon on the desktop.
  2. Select Delete, and press OK.

For builds 490 and later (including the final release):

  1. Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
  2. Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ explorer\ Desktop\ NameSpace\.
  3. Look for the key 00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046, that has a default value of Inbox.
  4. Delete the entire key (not just the default value), and close the Registry Editor.
  5. Click on the desktop, and press F5 to refresh the desktop so that this change will take effect.
